The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle - My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I love this book. I read it as a child and then again a hundred other times. The Last Unicorn has all the elements that makes me love fantasy. It’s character driven, with flawed individuals that don’t always know why they do what they do. I don’t like books that insist on characters that all know their own motivation. How often do we go through our days knowing exactly why we acted the way we did? I like characters that act like people – sometimes irrational, selfish and unthinking.
I like change in characters. If they are embroiled in this life altering event, they have to change. It doesn't have to be positive – characters should be allowed to change based on the experience. I like the idea of deconstructing a main character. Something bad happens to them. How does that affect them? At the end of The Last Unicorn, no one is the same, least of all the unicorn.
It has held up so well and deserves a good read now and then!
